food sovereignty

Food & Urban Agriculture

We practise food sovereignty through local, regenerative food systems that return control of food production to communities through ecological, low-input, nature-aligned methods. In an era of rising food costs and economic uncertainty, SoshCAN! views the soil beneath our feet as our greatest untapped asset.

Our mission is to transform Soshanguve from a consumer-driven township into a productive green landscape where nutrition is accessible to everyone.

Technical Excellence & Strategic Partnerships

While our passion is grassroots, our methods are rooted in rigorous agricultural science. We don’t just plant; we cultivate with intention.

To ensure our gardens are sustainable and high-yielding, we draw on high-level technical support and professional resources:

  • Agricultural Research Council (ARC): Through our collaboration with the ARC, we integrate professional-grade research into our township gardens. This partnership provides us with scientific insights into soil health, climate-smart crop selection, and pest management, ensuring our community projects are backed by the best agricultural data in the country.

Cultivating Resilience

  • Local Nurseries & Expertise: We work with local nurseries to source indigenous plants and high-quality seedlings. These partnerships allow us to provide residents with the right tools and local knowledge to ensure their home gardens thrive in our specific South African climate.

  • Permaculture & Organic Principles: With over 30 years of hands-on experience in organic gardening, Sosh-CAN! teaches methods that work with nature. We focus on composting and water-wise techniques to minimise costs while maximising nutritional output.

Our Call to Action: Plant Your Future

We are moving beyond the idea of "beautification" and toward "edible landscapes." By turning a neglected corner or a schoolyard into a vegetable garden, we are doing more than growing food—we are growing independence.

  • At Home: We provide the guidance to turn small yards into "mini-farms" that supplement household groceries.
  • At Schools: We help establish learning gardens that provide fresh produce for students while serving as outdoor classrooms for the next generation of urban farmers.
  • In the Community: We reclaim illegal dumping sites and transform them into communal food hubs, proving that collective action can solve local hunger.
